Early Tax And Census Lists

Important reminder:
When individual tax collectors prepared their Township returns and assessments they did so on
separate sheets [some are still preserved]. For many years these sheets were then posted in semi-alphabetical arrangement in ledgers at the County. Many source sheets were in German script. At the
time of County rearrangement/ posting, some translation or Anglicization occurred, some names were
missed or misposted to different townships etc. So, in addition to errors made by the collector, the county
staff made changes. Further, the compiler of this work has interpreted some of the names in some
instances- the final result is likely far from perfect, and you will find disparate spellings of the same
surname.
As a general rule, men were not listed until age 21, or marriage - therefore, it is sometimes possible to
estimate age of men who did not marry before age 21. Remember however, to establish that the family
was living in that township the previous tax year.
Widowers were not normally listed as single men.
There are always exceptions.
"To Jacob Shaver collector, a list of all settlers between the first Ridge of Mountains of Schuylkill and
Sweatoro within this County and not Laid into Townships or Districts. Dec 30, 1752. A Tax to be
Laid on Inhabitants Berks County 3d per pound for defraying the charge of ye sd County and laying
out the same, etc."
